RESOLUTION FROM SENATE PLENARY

THE SENATE
STUDENTS' UNION GOVERNMENT
UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA

UPDATE ON THE SENATE PLENARY HELD ON THE 6TH OF MAY, 2017, AT THE SUG SECRETARIAT UNEC.

Greetings Great Lions and Lionesses

The plenary kicked off at about 11:30am. After the opening prayer by the President of the Senate, the Senate  swiftly proceeded to act on its Agenda for the day.

Among other things, the Senate painstakingly considered Bills that were presented  before it.

The first bill titled UTILIZATION OF OFFICIAL RESIDENTIAL ROOMS BILL 2017. This bill was specifically propelled from the fact that every session, special rooms in hostels are allocated to Union Principal officers however these

rooms are, sometimes, not occupied by the principal officers of the union (Executives, President of the  Senate, Speaker of House of Representatives and Hall Governors.

Moreso, every session, funds are allocated for the refurbishment of these official rooms yet some of the  principal officers leave their official rooms to stay off-campus or other places away from the Hostels.

In consideration of the above reasons, the Senate is in the process to enact an Act which will make it mandatory for Student Representatives/ Principal Officers of the Union To STAY WITH The students!

Furthermore this would ensure that the Principal officers of the Union feel what the students feel, know what they fear, know their challenges and be available at all times to proffer solution to the problems of the Students as much as they can.

Consequently, Senate approved the bill and it passed the First reading.

Still on bills, the Senate considered another bill titled HOSTEL ALLOCATION PRIVILEGES BILL, 2017

This bill simply suggests that students should have the privilege of retaining their respective rooms if they so wish.

The Senate considered this bill based on the following reasons:

Since current occupants know that there is a probability of retaining their rooms if they wish to,  they would

1. Maintain their rooms and even furnish/beautify their rooms, thus improving the quality of the hostel rooms.

2. Since one of the prerequisite for likely getting a hostel in the University, is the early payment of school fee, then students who want to get as well as retain their rooms (if possible), to pay their school fees on time.

3. Since the retaining of rooms by successful applicants is *an option*, it gives the student more opportunity to explore the hostel rooms

4. This would reduce vandalization in hostels and other important premises.

This Bill also passed the First reading.

Dear Lions and Lionesses please note that the Senate operates on a system of democracy , the government of the students, by the students and for the students!

ON THIS NOTE, THE SENATE WISHES TO HEAR/GET THE OPINIONS OF LIONS AND LIONESSES WITH REGARD TO THESE BILLS
