[CONFIRMED] ASUU RESOLVES TO INDEFINITE STRIKE

Information reaching us is that the proposed indefinite strike by the ASUU has taken effect.

According to the document signed by the Chairman Prof Ogunyemi. The union have commenced the indefinite strike.
The indefinite strike was necessary due to the inability of the federal government to meet up with the M0U reached by the two parties (federal Government and ASUU).
The NEC earlier had met at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi on the 22nd and 23rd July, 2017, and deliberated extensively on issues arising from the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement, the 2013 MoU and other related issues and decided to conduct a referendum at the branch congresses on the next line of action.
the Result of the Meeting held on Sunday 13th July 2017 by ASUU in an undisclosed venue, had them make the very decision of the indefinite strike.

According to the document, Ogunyemi pointed out that the strike action is to be a total, comprehensive and indefinite action whereby no form of academic activities including teaching, attendance of any meeting, conduct and supervision of any examination at any level, supervision of project or thesis at any level should take place at any of the nation’s universities.

Recalling that it had to embark on a six month strike between July and December 2013 and the strike was suspended when government signed an MoU with the union. “Of all the items contained in the MoU, only the N200b out of a total of N1.3tr of the Public Universities Revitalisation (Needs Assessment) fund was released.

However, the union had also embark on a one week warning strike in November 2016 to press for the implementation of 2013 MoU. Of which government did not implement the understanding reach between the union and Federal Government base on the intervention by the leadership of Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

According to the document, Ogunyemi also pointed out amongst other items that staffs should not be involved in any academic activities of the school including examination activities. Tis will be a very serious order as a good number of varsities are taking or are even preparing for Examinations currently, TASUED is at the verge of concluding, UNILAG will commence this month amongst others

Meanwhile a Geoscience student of the University of Lagos, he has it that the wishes that UNILAG do not join the strike as their Exam is very close and that it will be a setback for them. He however pointed out in sarcasm that the strike could hold after his exam.
